Matthew Barney’s The Cremaster Cycle (1994–2002) is a cycle of five symbolic, allegorical movies that creates a self-enclosed aesthetic system, aimed to discover the method of creation. The movies are full of allusions to reproductive organs and sexual growth, and use narrative fashions drawn from biography, mythology, and geology.

Julie Taymor attempts to translate Kahlo’s distinctive visual sensibility to the screen via vivid, live-action recreations of scenes from her work. In a few of the movie’s greatest moments, painted backdrops, cease movement animation and digital results intermix until the constituent elements are indistinguishable. These scenes wonderfully approximate the sort of subjective expertise that artists always seem to be trying to find. At the same time, they explore the connection between art and the viewer, as well as art’s somewhat unsettling contiguity to wealth and power.
